I’m beyond excited to kick off my first ever One Room Challenge with a project so near and dear to my heart – my baby boy’s nursery! We are expecting his arrival sometime in late August – so yes, this month-long reno will have us ready with plenty of time to spare. But i’m really excited to have the deadline – because with this babe being my second, I could totally see things dragging and being left unfinished. Would you believe me if I say a pair of swimming trunks I recently bought for Hart inspired this entire nursery design? I was thrown for a loop on the whole boy-nursery thing (bye bye blush and bold b&w floral) and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little lost creatively. Enter these adorable zebra swim trunks. Animal print? Good! Black and white? Good! Zeeeebs? Good! I had found my muse. The design plan was ON.

Since Sherwin Williams announced Cavern Clay as the 2019 color of the year, I knew I had to find a way to incorporate a saturated rust hue into my home. Originally I thought this might be in a guest room revamp – but I especially love how unexpected and bold the color feels in a nursery. I’m still narrowing down swatches, but SW Cavern Clay, TruePenny and Pennywise are all contenders. Trimmed out in black (Benjamin Moore – Onyx to keep it consistent with the rest of my house) and set against a creamy grey-white (Sherwin Williams – Origami White, my new fav!) and just a pop of blue from the wallpaper, I just know this rust is going to pop in just the right way.

Enter Kenny. We have a lot of actual WORK to do in this room that isn’t simply aesthetic. From an awkward built-in “desk” under a sloping beam (not sure what it actually is) to a wall full of paneling, it’s time to dust off the miter saw. We’re demoing the desk to put in a bookshelf / bench / reading nook area which is a huge undertaking in itself, adding paneling to the wall behind the crib – and painting EVERYTHING. Literally, everything. Trim and doors will be black, walls will be white, paneling will be rust. Thank god (and Amazon!) for my paint sprayer!

Ahhh, the fun part! But in my case… this part is almost 90% done for me. Because, you know, we already have a ton of one-year old nursery hand-me-downs. The rocker, the Snoo, the Crib – all items that will be passed down from Hart. To save money, we are going to re-purpose the dresser already in the guest room and add new knobs to freshen it up (can you believe the Rejuvenation knock-offs I found? Such a steal!). So really, all we’re looking at here to make the space feel new is lighting, textiles and artwork. I’m so in love with all of the lighting and rugs I found to deck out the space – from the wall sconces to the ceiling flushmount to the perfect black and white rug – but I’m still working on textiles and artwork. I mean, I have to have SOME surprises throughout this process, right?
