Does size REALLY matter?

When we moved into our home, the laundry room was huge. It had tons of storage, a closet for the washer and dryer, and vinyl floors. It was lacking functionality – and a sink. To be honest, most of the time this room served as a dumping ground for things we didn’t want to organize or deal with. It was not an efficient use of space for our family. Until now!

If you’ve been following along, then you know that this giant laundry room happened to back up to our (former!) tiny master shower. In order to make our shower larger and add on an additional master closet (for me!), we cut about 250 sq feet out of our old laundry room. Yes – you read correctly – we took space AWAY to make the laundry room of our dreams. We also busted down the closet that the washer and dryer were previously housed in to open up and utilize the most of our space.

We did not have a huge budget for this portion of our reno. So we reused cabinetry and uppers from the previous laundry room so we only had to add minimal trim and finish work to complete the space (this was professionally done, btw). I’d highly recommend looking at what you already have to work with to save major dollars during renovations. By using the same tile on our laundry room floor as the shower floor, we were able to buy in a larger quantity from an online retailer and cut down on the “buffer” that is always recommended by contractors by combining both spaces. We also were able to use the same slab for the little counter top and our shower bench. These design decisions – painting existing cabinetry, leveraging tile and counter choices across two rooms – didn’t limit us, but rather enabled us to apply budget to other areas of importance (like the sink! And the shiplap! And the tiled backsplash!). These consistent elements also tie two very different rooms together.

Not having a place to throw barf covered pjs and blow-out onesies upstairs (where all of our bedrooms are) was a real bummer – it really bothered me not having a sink in our laundry room. Adding this large apron-front (Black!) sink into the space has been a total gamechanger. Another thing we did (that I can’t recommend enough!) was lowering and pulling out the uppers to be in LINE with the washer & dryer instead of mounted directly on the back wall. How annoying is arching over the washer and dryer to reach those dang cabinets? It’s a struggle I happily no longer face. Finally, we went old-school and added retractable clothes lines to the alcove with the washer and dryer so I would always have a dedicated space to air dry my clothes!

Our laundry room is open to the staircase landing on our second floor. It is also the first thing I see when I open up my bedroom door every morning. There is no door to close off the “ugly”. So I thought – why not make it beautiful? Little details go a long way in spaces like this – cabinets concealing the washer and dryer keep the space looking put together. The black vertical shiplap and oversized globe ceiling light bring the drama and visual interest. And the tiled backsplash wall and floating shelf, black sink and gold finishes… just make me happy. Don’t be afraid to invest in small spaces to make them beautiful, functional and work for your family’s situation! Plus – having a beautiful laundry room totally makes the chore more enjoyable. I swear.
