Ever since we moved into this house, I have had BIG plans for the living room on the main floor. Our makeover was slow at first – and full of facelifts. I’m still not 100% sold on the fireplace, but that reno is far far off and in the interim, I knew the space needed something. After drooling over many a board and batten wall treatment and lusting after shiny black french doors on IG, I finally committed. I’m happy to say that with a little budget and a little (okay, LOT) of work this boring wall is finally beautiful! Now, I don’t necessarily claim to be the queen of DIY. But I do a fair share of projects myself, and I’m never afraid to roll up my sleeves and paint. This project required a little more labor and skill, though (enter Instagram husband!)
There are already tons of detailed, step-by-step DIYs out there on how to make your own board and batten wall of your dreams (most of which we consulted prior to kicking off this project!). So i’m going to share the materials and tools you will need, how much you can expect to spend, how much time you should set aside, and quick tips we picked up along the way.

- 2.5” wide MDF board strips that are about .75” thick
- Miter saw (or circular saw)
- Palm router (because we had tons of crazy moulding to fit the new trim against)
- Finish nailer and nails (or brad nailer)
- Liquid Nails
- Caulking
- Orbital sander with fine grit pads or fine grit sanding blocks
- Paint, drop cloth and smooth finish paint rollers
- Painter’s tape
- Standard measuring tools and levels

Depending on how many of the tools you have or don’t have, and the size of your wall, this part could get costly. Luckily for us, my husband had most of these tools. So I will break out what we actually had to buy for this project and how much we spent to give you a rough idea. For us and our 18ftx9ft wall plus two french doors, this project was under $200!
- 2 gallons of semi-gloss acrylic paint (PPG “Delicate White” and Benjamin Moore “Onyx” – $100
- Smooth finish paint rollers and painter’s tape – $16
- 10 MDF strips, 12 ft long each – $70
- Liquid Nails and caulking – $10

Maybe you or your husband or carpenter or gracious friend is better at this stuff than we are. But we spent about 2 weekends and 2 additional afternoons and week nights (in between baby’s nap time and after his bed time) to complete this project – and that was with both of us splitting tasks and working diligently! A rough breakout of time per task is below (which also gives you an idea of the steps involved in the process). This took us just under 30 hours split between the two of us, when all was said and done!
- Measuring, mocking up and prepping the space: 3 hours
- Shopping & unloading supplies: 2 hours
- Removing, sanding & prepping the french doors: 3 hours
- Painting two-sided french doors: 4 hours active time
- Cutting and securing board and batten to the walls: 10 hours
- Caulking all of the pieces of trim: 2 hours
- Painting the walls and trim: 5 hours
- Reinstalling the doors and removing tape / errant paint: 1 hour
- Cleaning up and restoring the space: 1 hour

- Tape it out first – My husband and I spent a GOOD chunk of time (3 precious baby-sleeping-hours!) to measure out the space, and tape lines where we thought we would want the paneling to be. We tried so many different ratios of panels, and numbers of panels, to make sure we had it just right for the space. If I hadn’t had this visualization, I definitely would have chosen a different size panel – and in the end, it wouldn’t have looked as good!
- Re-measure between every cut – Even if you measure ahead of time like we did, and think everything is going to work out perfectly – there will always be something that pops up that you didn’t think of, or something that was transposed incorrectly. Just trust me – do yourself a favor, and be double check your measurements.
- Don’t skimp on sanding – or caulking! – Setting the stage for your new paint is so important. I used an orbital sander and really took my time roughing up the french doors to make sure the new paint would apply smoothly and evenly. And caulking is soooo important to hide all gaps and cracks and get a professional finish. Following through on these (undesirable) parts of the DIY job makes a better final product.
- Don’t be afraid to adjust your measurements to fit the space – Shhhhh, do you want to know a secret? Each row of our panels is a sliiiiiiightly different height. In order to frame around our Frame TV and doorway in an aesthetically pleasing way, we had to bluff a few inches here and there to make it work – and that is OK. It is almost undetectable by eye, but definitely would have looked wonky if measured out perfectly.
