Although I’ve been dreaming about this bathroom reno for 3 years, I was plotting about the footprint more than the finishes! But when our preferred contractor had a last minute cancellation for the beginning of Feb, I wasn’t going to let lack of design direction hold us back!

I really want to create a classic space that flows from the rest of our house without being redundant. Of course I plan to incorporate my favorite palette (black, white & gold) but plan on bringing in a new twist, as well. My tile choices complement the shapes and materials of the other tile in our house but with a new take. The decisions may be a little rushed, but the final product is going to be forever. I’m so excited with how this design has come together. Take a look at the complete mood board, layout and design rationale below!

Our plan has been finalized! (See above). Luckily, we don’t have to move any plumbing. And we aren’t running into any structural issues with the changes we wanted to make. But demo and moving all of the walls, electricity and vents is going to take some time. My favorite part of this floor plan is the beautiful sight line that leads to my very own brand new closet! But more to come on that later – this post is all about the bathroom!

Because we’re not changing the plumbing footprint of our bathroom, we had to get creative on how to open things up! Busting down the wall in between the vanity and shower was the perfect solution, and finding this beautiful shower door was the cherry on top! It mimics the many black french doors throughout our home and brings in such a unique and distinct design element.

Throughout our home we already have:

  • White subway tile
  • Marble herringbone tile
  • Black large hexagon tile
  • White hexagon penny tile

We ended up settling on a large-scale square Carrara Marble tile for the floor to keep things classic. But mixed it up by selecting a matte white elongated hex from a local tile shop with a ton of texture and variation for the shower. I found a similar one (little more budget friendly) on Overstock, linked here. We are going to run this tile vertically on the entire wall behind the vanity and into the shower. We’ll finish things off with a Carrara hex penny tile on the shower floor!

This is where I went back and forth, and back and forth. To be honest, I’m still not 100% solidified in all of these choices.

What I know:

What I don’t know:

  • If the faucets will be wall mounted, single hole or wide spread. I’m really leaning towards wall mounted.
  • Exactly WHICH gold hardware will be on the vanity drawers. I’ve been contemplating a finger pull like this one (as mocked)
  • Textiles. Probably going to keep things simple with fluffy, white towels – but outside of the perfect bath mat I found from CB2, I am still in the market for curtains and hand towels. Ayiyiyi.
  • Grout colors. Light or dark? How much contrast am I going for? I’m always so indecisive about this, but especially when soap scum and heavy traffic come into play. I want the grout we select to be easy to maintain. More to come on this decision!

So. As I said above – I am not abandoning my love affair with the monochromatic! With the marble floors, white porcelain tiles and black and gold fixtures, this bathroom is definitely in line with the underlying color scheme that flows through our house. But when it came time to make a decision on cabinetry – I knew I wanted to pull in a little something different. We are going with a dark dark dark DARK green (leaning towards Benjamin Moore Essex Green) on the cabinetry and I’m SO excited! We are painting the (few) walls in the bathroom Origami White by Sherwin Williams, which complements the creamy-white (yellow undertone) trim that is already running through the bathroom and entire house (PPG “Delicate White”)

Construction starts Monday, Feb 4th at 8am. It is estimated to take 5-6 weeks to complete, which includes the work being done on the new laundry room (more to come on that later as well!) Yes, technically we are creating 3 new spaces out of the current master bathroom and laundry room, so expect lots of updates and more design boards soon!
