The most frequent questions that pop up in my DMs are all kid-related. Help! My kids’ playroom looks like a hodgepodge and it’s where ALL of the pictures of them are taken! How do you stop your kids from messing with _______? Don’t your kids rip your pictures down? Go-to’s for a kid-friendly family room? And on, and on and on. I mean, I get it. Getting the perfect balance of fun, functional and aesthetically pleasing is HARD. So – don’t overthink it! The easiest way to create an effortless look is to start with an effortless end-to-end online shopping experience – AllModern sells modern furniture + decor – all shipped fast + free. Since I recently updated my playroom with some new pieces from AllModern I decided to gather my thoughts on the subject, plus I’ve rounded up my favorite pieces so you can curate your very own effortless family space. Read on for 3 easy tips on creating a modern yet cozy and character-filled space for your family (and kids!) that still flows with the rest of your house.
Tip 1: Ditch your coffee table.
Yeah I said it. And I MEANT it. Look, kids don’t care about your coffee table styling. They want to use it to build forts and easily shove it to the side to construct their train set. They want to bounce on it while they’re mindlessly watching Octonauts. Replacing my tip-y coffee table with this upholstered ottoman is my kids’ favorite decor move I’ve ever made. And to be honest, it’s one of mine as well. Aesthetically, I love the clean lines and the cognac piping – Functionally, I love the wipeable surface and how SOFT this thing is! Some other favs from AllModern are below.
Tip 2: Embrace colorful upholstery.
The easiest way to make your den / playroom / TV room / basement / family lounge space feel playful is with a pop of color. Don’t chicken out on how you pop your color. COMMIT and go for the whole couch or armchairs or SOMETHING! Hear me out – going bold on the upholstery means you can play it safe on the walls and have your neutral base continued from the rest of your home (so your playroom feels seamless!) but the color indicates this room doesn’t take itself TOO seriously (so your playroom feels… well… playful!) Select a color that calls back to other areas of your home so it doesn’t seem random.
Tip 3: Roll out a fun rug.
Geometric shapes. Bold plaid. Playful lines. Something you would be totally scared to put in your living room. THATS what I want the rug in your den to be. Because – why not? Please note- “Fun” does not necessarily mean “Colorful.” And you don’t need to abandon your aesthetic here – just push it. Call back to another theme or design trend somewhere else in your home and amplify it. Have a few checkered throw pillows in your living room? How about a checkered rug in your bonus room? If you don’t take the rug in this room too seriously, you’ll master that effortless and playful look.
Depending on the exact function of YOUR family space, your additional furniture and decor needs will vary. You might need more space for toys, more storage for toys, a built-in around a TV or a music area. But if you keep these tips in mind for your decision-making for the core of the room, you’ll ensure that it actually feels like a kid-friendly space that flows with the rest of your home. Don’t forget to layer textiles and cozy accents to finish the look!
