Organic. Modern. Green. Locker room. Unique. Ranch style. Fun. Classic. Ayiyiyiyiyi.
When setting out to design the boys’ shared jack and jill style bathroom, I had too many buzzwords running through my head. Between the design and fine-tuning the perfect layout that would maximize the space and reduce plumbing relocations… Blank slates can be… overwhelming! Before you even get to the “fun” part there are so many considerations. I was spinning! So I took a deep breath, took it one step at a time – and i’m SO excited to share the final design plans for the boys’ bathroom with you! Just in time for tile to go in THIS WEEK!
A few tips on stretching that budget….
We started with a HUGE primary bathroom with what appeared to be a very wonky layout. But when we stripped back the layers (and demo’ed the crap out of it) – we realized the main plumbing locations for the existing shower, toilet and vanity would actually be quite convenient once the bathroom was walled off and cut in half. Working off of the current plumbing footprint saved us a lot of time and budget. Another huge saver? Buying a prefabricated vanity! Listen, I love me some custom cabinetry and selecting gorgeous, unique slabs. But in my opinion, if you’re on a budget the kids’ bathroom is not the spot to splurge. There are such AMAZING vanities out there in a variety of sizes, finishes and colors that come with REAL stone tops for a fraction of the cost (and time!) of going the custom route. I snagged this 60” double vanity with a black granite top that is actually painted a popular Sherwin-Williams color – “Pewter Green.” Some of my go-to 60″ prefabricated vanities are below!
Dutton Ranch, but make it modern.
I truly believe that tile provides an opportunity to showcase personality in your home, not to play it safe. I wanted something bold and fun for the boys’ bathroom that they would be able to grow into, but that still fit the style and color scheme of our home. A modern ranch vibe immediately came to mind, and after searching Pinterest for Pendleton-esque inspo, I was thrilled to find this Cali Black and White Porcelain Wall and Floor Tile at The Tile Shop. I had seen similar cement tiles out there on other sites for about double the cost – and was uncertain about my ability to keep cement tiles looking clean over time. But porcelain floor tiles? Basically a Mom’s dream come true! And the style could not be more on point – The Tile Shop has soooo many great trendy options at amazing price-points, and thoughtfully curated so you’re not completely overwhelmed looking on their site. So, the floors were a go – but what does one pair with a such a bold patterned tile? Timeless subway tile, of course! Which – again – does NOT have to be boring! I wanted to go for something dramatic, organic and classic – and started my search for the following:
- Tiles with subtle variation. Still shiny, but with organic texture and variation so they don’t look like perfect bricks on the wall.
- Color! A subway tile that comes in the perfect soft black and almost (but not completely stark) white
- Cost-effective: This factors in the price of the tile (under $10/sq foot was my goal) but also the size! Super small subway tiles will take longer to lay, thus cost more when it comes to install. A larger subway tile was a must, in my case.
Well, I didn’t have to search too long. There is a wide selection of quality inventory at The Tile Shop that was so easy for me to browse. Using the site’s helpful search tools, I was easily able to narrow down the parameters and find EXACTLY what I was looking for – the Verano 4×12 Ceramic Wall Tile in Anthracite and White. Now, to finalize my subway tile pattern…
Details, details, details.
A colorblocked tile scheme that is stacked vertically AND horizontally. A large SINGLE arched mirror over a shared double vanity. A shower head that can can be lowered on an arm to get suds out of pint-sized dudes. Hanging pendants instead of sconces! All of the final details sort of fell into place as I finalized the tile installation pattern and laid out the vanity area. If you’re tight on space on the vanity wall (like I was!) going with a large single mirror and hanging pendants maximizes your wall space and keeps things from looking too busy. I can’t wait until the tile is finally installed this week and I can show you guys some progress shots!
