Is playful-chic a thing? Well if not, I plan on making it one! You know I love designing bathrooms – can’t imagine anything more fun than picking out tile and finishes. Going into this one – I knew three things: I wanted it to be fun, functional, and flow with the rest of my home. All the while being something beautiful and timeless you’d see in the pages of a magazine. Oh ya, and come in under budget. Easy, right? Hardly! But I hope in the end I truly love this design, and hope in the end I pull it all off when it comes to life. Read on to see the major design components I decided on to create a bathroom that will grow with my kids and flow with my home.

I’m so excited to incorporate a window seat into our bathroom design like @kristintryinteriors to maximize space for storage and bodies in this long narrow bathroom!

Tricky Layouts Call for Creative Cabinetry
I can’t even show you the rendering of this bathroom’s layout, because we have changed it so many times. We’ve moved a door. We’ve pushed out a wall. We’ve moved the vanity. We’ve moved a window! All to make the most of this space so it can WORK for our family and our (soon to be) 3 growing children. Long and narrow, this 15×5 ft bathroom will be divided into 2 spaces – the main room, with double vanity and laundry chute, and a smaller room (separated with a wall and pocket door) with a toilet and bath/shower combo. In addition to it’s narrow depth, this room is also tricky because of the window situation. Yes – there is a large window (necessary for the integrity of our exterior) right in the middle of the main room of the bathroom. So, we decided to place this (beautiful black paned) window in the middle of the double vanity and make it a focal point! There will be a mirror and sink on either side, and we decided to really play up the space by making the custom vanity dip down to a window seat with storage under the window. It will be nice to have a place for the adults to sit in such a narrow bathroom getting 3 kids bathed and ready for bed. Plus, you can never have too much storage!

You don’t need the perfect dimensions to create the perfect bathroom layout for YOUR family.

The tonal walls, floor and trim from @clairethomas make me swoon!

Black And White And Green All Over
This isn’t a riddle. I just really love black, white and green. When we think “kids spaces” sometimes we get playful with color. But to ensure this bathroom would flow with the rest of our house, I decided to stick with the common palette, and get playful with pattern instead! The floor tile from Merola really makes this space unique and special. It’s matte (which I love!) and a little muted, but still so bold. I plan on running the stripes down the length of this long bathroom floor to play up the dimensions. A white glossy penny tile (also from Merola) will surround the tub walls, keeping things simple, seamless and classic. And the rest of the walls? Well, they will be painted a campy, rich, muted, mossy green – the PERFECT green – Vintage Vogue by Benjamin Moore. And so will the trim. And the cabinets. Yes – I love the character and class a room takes on when painting all of the various trim and surfaces the same color. It will balance the playfulness of the floors quite nicely so the space doesn’t feel hokey. What do you think of my all green room inspo pic? Does it scare you or excite you?

You can still make a statement in a space without veering from your home’s overall design aesthetic.

Mixing Metals
Are you a fan? I’ve had a lot of my followers tell me how much it scares them to mix metals. That they either don’t know how, or don’t like combining for fear of creating a space that doesn’t feel cohesive. Well, I’m here to confess my love for mixing metals. and bring back an old fav: chrome! Something about shiny chrome just screams “kids’ space” to me. It feels fun and creative and classic! So I picked chrome pieces as the base metal in here – faucet, shower, and light fixtures. I love how the old-school light fixture style of the bath bar is updated with super modern lines (Pssst – CRAVEN10 for 10% off your lights.com order!) – the juxtaposition feels so perfect for what I’m going for in this space. Naturally, I plan on mixing these chrome pieces with brushed gold (again, tying this space in with the rest of our home) as my secondary metal – it will be found on the door knob, mirrors, drawer hardware and (TBD) accessories like TP holders, soap dispensers and framed artwork.

Can you even believe we’ll be bathing three babes in here? I can’t wait. Look out for updates on the progress of this space and my favorite part – tile install!
