Lots of balls in the air over here lately. We’re moving. We’re renting. We’re building. We’re – transitioning Hart to a big boy bed. Gulp.
We’re only going to be in our rental 6-8 months, but I definitely want it to feel like home. ESPECIALLY where the boys are concerned. So it may come as no surprise to you that the very first room I’ve designed (2 ways) is Hart’s new big boy room. Take a look at the designs below and how I plan on leveraging new items plus ones I already have to create two unique spaces for Hart to grow and play.

The BIG purchase; a BIG boy bed that can grow with Hart. I was debating between a metal bed and an upholstered one when my ever-so-wise-sister reminded me that little boys are disgusting and rambunctious; Metal = lots of bruises in the future, and upholstered = lots of stains. So when I stumbled on this faux-leather-and-wood-upholstered beauty from Urban Outfitters I didn’t look any further. It is neutral while making a statement – EXACTLY what I had in mind to pair with the navy blue fair isle stripe bedding I scored on super clearance at the Pendleton Outlet earlier this year. I went with a queen size since it will fit in the room and makes it more conducive to sleeping family for visits and holidays.

I’m not a huge fan of any of our current dressers. I feel like I purchased them all in a rush and on a budget out of necessity, before my style was really baked. But i’m also not a fan of spending $1200+ on a fancy dresser for my 2 year old. Enter the DIY! I was so inspired by this navy blue dresser I saw on Anthropologie. I love the color, the clean lines and the unique hardware. The dresser Kenny and I currently use in our room has a very similar shape, so I’ve decided to transform it! I might mix my own paint using some blue samples I have in the garage, but the color Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore is my goal. I found killer hardware on Amazon – drawer pulls and legs – that will really take this DIY to the next level. I promise I’ll share all of my materials and steps when I get there, but for now wanted to share my vision. I’m excited!

I haven’t rented in a very long time. But having checked out our new (temporary) home in real life, I saw a few challenges: vanilla style, small rooms and (kinda older) carpet. By covering most of the floor in Hart’s room with an 8×10 rug I already have, and adding minimal, low profile accent furniture, his room will be unique and uncluttered. A vintage lumbar from my favorite Etsy pillow shop, removable wallpaper in a fun Star Wars pattern and hanging a canvas print of a picture my husband took on canvas complete the space, making it feel anything but vanilla!

I’ll admit it; It’s kind of intimidating to plan out and design an ENTIRE house at one time. But if you’re true to yourself, your aesthetic and your goals, and take it one room at a time, it is very doable. I got this rug a few months back with the long-term goal of putting it in our new house. I love how it feels colorful yet neutral, vintage yet playful – all of the vibes I want in Hart’s long-term room. A paneled accent half-wall in a muted, dusty blue (Van Courtland Blue by Benjamin Moore is currently my frontrunner, but I plan on testing a handful of swatches before we commit) and hardwired woven sconces add texture, warmth and permanence. The contrasting patterns and colors that a vintage lumbar, upholstered storage ottomans and prints of Star Wars blueprints bring to the space add a whimsical touch that screams little boy. Once we add some of Hart’s favorite “friends” (stuffed animals) and his signature hat wall to the space, it will really feel like him!
