Week 4 of the One Room Challenge, and we are finally seeing some MAJOR progress in the nursery. I’ve always considered myself on the bold side when it comes to design decisions – but I can honestly say, I’ve never done anything this wild before! When I dreamed up this accent wall, I knew it was a little out-there. But seeing it on your computer screen 800 pixels wide is one thing – seeing it come to life on your wall is another! I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was equally terrified and exhilarated. But the accent wall (that we will place the crib in front of) is COMPLETE and I am OBSESSED. What started with a grueling job of applying wallpaper continued with a DIY for dummies picture frame panel project and a gut decision on finding THE perfect rust paint color. Luckily for me, the week ended with the easiest and most seamless art and printing process EVER with BT Design Co and Art To Frames, two companies I was lucky enough to work with to perfect the finishing details for this accent wall. Read on for details on our wallpaper woes, paneling hack, which color rust I ended up selecting and all about my experience with Art To Frames and Bt Design Co!

I absolutely love the look of wallpaper. But after this weekend, It might be safe to say we’ll never put it up ourselves again. Guys, when you’re working with expensive materials (ummm I found it on a random website for a deal but this stuff goes for $180 a roll! What the what?) it is so nerve-wracking. We looked up YouTube videos, and we thought we were prepared. But here’s a tip: if you have ANY sort of texture on your wall, you are going to get wrinkles and your paper is going to have trouble sticking. And then you’re going to get even more wrinkles. We didn’t listen to tips of YouTubers and Bloggers that said to use liner paper, or to sand and prep your wall. We thought we would be fine. We weren’t. There is no cool timelapse of our wallpaper experience. It took us 3 hours, many tears, and a lot of waste to get 2 strips up! We didn’t even have to do any tricky cut-outs! So my advice to you if you’re taking on wallpapering: Order more paper than you think you’ll need (thankfully I did!), prep your wall (wish I had!), watch YouTube videos to gain confidence, and make your husband help you. Luckily with a wet washcloth, a lot of scraping and some time MOST of the wrinkles smoothed out. It looks pretty dang good from far, but it is far from good. We won’t be hired as pros ANYTIME soon!

When I designed this room, a lot of my vision was reliant on my husband and his handy woodworking skills. Problem is, my husband has been working a LOT lately. And the last thing he wanted to do was make me 6 picture frame paneling squares on his first Saturday off in 3 weeks. I could feel my project slowly coming to a halt – until I discovered that these babies are sold PRE-MADE. In a variety of sizes. After a quick trip to Lowes we WOULD have been ready to go… but you know me. Always making things difficult. I was planning on stacking the panels vertically on either side of the wall paper panel, and really wanted the center panel on either side to be longer than the top and bottom panels. So, Kenny had to head into the garage after all to make cuts in the panels so I could create my own personalized dimensions out of the pieces. I quickly glued the panels back together (with a glue gun… they aren’t real wood! It was the best way to make them stick!) and they were ready to nail up on the wall. Full disclosure, I taped the entire panel pattern out with painters tape before we nailed them up to make sure I was in love with the placement. We had electrical outlets to work around which dictated our spacing a bit – but I wanted them more towards the ceiling, anyway. I held the level and panels tightly while my husband nailed them up with a nail gun. Then he caulked every. Last. seam and crack while I finished painting the ceiling Origami White. Yeah, he’s a keeper.

So, I picked up roughly 1000 paint swatches of slightly-different orange hues that ranged from terracotta to burnt sienna to blush almost? Way too many swatches. I didn’t want to complicate things (or confuse myself) by picking up a ton of samples. So, I narrowed down to my top 6 swatches and then went online and did a little research. The problem with looking at paint online is, you never know what the lighting situation was, or what filters were used. But, if you go on the paint manufacturers website, you’ll normally find some additional information. Like, color pairing recommendations. This is how I settled on Cavern Clay by Sherwin Williams. Not only did I find multiple images online of this color paired with black trim / accents (it didn’t look too Halloween-y!) but Sherwin Williams actually RECOMMENDS Cavern Clay with Origami White! So… yes. Cavern Clay was the only sample I even tried. After the second coat dried, I knew I loved it. Cavern Clay is the perfect interpretation of Terracotta. It’s not too pink, not too red and not too brown. It’s dark enough not to look washed out without being TOO dark. And it perfectly complemented the denim blue of my zeebs! So why complicate things by bringing other colors into the mix? I scrambled back to my home-away-from-home (Sherwin Williams) to pick up a quart. 2 coats later, and i’m in LOVE.

So, needless to say – we’re exhausted from the entire feature wall experience. So you can only imagine my delight with having THE most perfect print arrive  framed and ready to go at my doorstep! I want to share a little about my experience with BT Design Co and Art To Frames.

If you follow along my stories, you know that “bro” is a common phrase in my vernacular. My sister and I call each other bro (we’re weird) and we even call her son “Brosef Josef” (His real name is Miller. Like I said, we’re really weird.) So the fact that I’m having ACTUAL bro’s is very special to me. I knew that with all of the grand and colorful elements I had going on in the nursery, I wanted a piece of art that was bold and masculine. Just to ground the space. Bryant from BT Design Co came to the rescue and whipped this print up for me. BT Design Co was collaborative, communicative and brought my vision to life for me – I’m obsessed! Be sure and check out this etsy shop to see all of their amazing prints that you can purchase, download and print on your own – or collaborate to make your own custom piece of art!

But mama’s tired guys. I’ve been working non-stop either for my day job, dealing with bathroom renovation drama, working on this nursery or taking care of my son. I really don’t have the time or patience right now to go get a piece of art printed, matted and framed. That’s where Art to Frames comes in. You guys, have you used their website? You can update your high-resolution files and go through the custom framing process step-by-step, right from the comfort of your sweats. There were so many AMAZING options it was hard for me to choose – but the selection process itself was sooooo easy. I ended up selecting a .75 inch thick satin black frame because with all of the paneling on the wall, I didn’t want anything too bulky. Although Art To Frames has a ton of anti-glare, really high-quality glass options, since I’m hanging this directly over my little guy’s crib, I decided to get my piece of art printed on canvas. Guys, this ain’t your hobby lobby canvas. The quality is unreal, and I can’t believe the price-point – under $60 to have it framed and everything! It arrived in perfect condition, very safely wrapped with mounting hardware ready to hang on my wall. It was so refreshing to have such a low maintenance experience after such a HIGH maintenance project! I can’t recommend Art To Frames enough – and if you use the code HAVEN15 you can get 15% off your custom framing order! Do ittttt.
